Cakes by Cupcakes In Heels

Hi bloggers!

Sorry this will not be a Paris entry. I didn't have a chance to go over hundreds of pictures from Paris and I don't want to miss anything b/c Paris was beautiful! It's just been a really hectic holiday and wedding season (had five wedding orders this month!). I would like to update my blog more often so I'll keep this entry short and sweet =).

After posting pictures of the wedding cupcakes with a 6" cake on Halloween, we've been getting a few cake orders and a few more coming up. Honestly, we didn't expect to get so many cake orders b/c after all, our company is Cupcakes In Heels.

Personally, I prefer cupcakes over cakes. I like the fact that guests will each get a mini individual cake. You don't need plates, knifes and forks. You don't need to share your "cake" and don't you think they're super adorable? I know my son's school does not allow parents to bring cakes to school but cupcakes are perfectly fine.

Cakes, well, it just requires... lots of patience. haha~ I'm just not a very patient person and combined with a super anal personality, cakes is not my best friend. Decorating cakes just takes a lot longer than frosting cupcakes especially when most of the time, it's a one shot deal (like fondant a cake). You make one mistake with the cupcake, you have plenty to work with. You make one mistake with the cake, it can be a disaster and can completely ruin your cake and you'd have to start over. There are just so many little things that you can messed up with the cake so it's quite stressful especially when time is your enemy, like today.

I wish I had a few more hours for the Tokidoki cake b/c I would've made the borders differently (that was the quickest fondant border I came up with at the last minute), made more gumpaste candies instead of flowers and another one or two figures, etc... The pet peeve I have for cakes is they are never perfect like the little adorable cupcakes and with my personality, it drives me nuts!

Despite the imperfect cakes, making our clients happy is our number one concern so if they want cakes, we'll try to make them a perfect beautiful cake =). Here are just a few cakes we've baked the past month, they're mostly red velvet flavors b/c for those that doesn't like vanilla cake, they will like red velvet. For those that doesn't chocolate, they will like red velvet. For those that doesn't like sweets or only likes the not-so-sweet cakes, they will like red velvet. Our number one seller is red velvet and it doesn't contain nuts. If you are allergic to eggs, we can bake them without the eggs and they will still be moist and delicious =). If a client gives us permission to choose a flavor, red velvet is our top choice. Personally, my favorite is our pistachio flavor b/c it is very "pistachio-ly" and I love anything nutty! Okie, back to the cakes!

Pretty in Purple Cake

Our client, Irene wants the smallest cake, which is a 6" cake to celebrate her daughter's 10th birthday. The only thing Irene asked was to make this cake purplish b/c it's her daughter's favorite color (I like her daughter already). The cake is red velvet filled with creamy almond frosting and frost with vanilla buttercream.

Oventz Winter Wonderland Bridal Social at Affina Manhattan Hotel

Winter white wedding cake and winter white snow flake theme cupcakes.
12 dozen baby red velvet cupcakes and 12 dozen baby pistachio cupcakes for tasting. All gone at the end of the night with great comments like "the best cupcakes I've ever eaten", "they're so moist", "never ate such great pistachio cupcakes in my life", "my favorite flavor is red velvet and your red velvet cupcakes are the best I've ever eaten", "they taste so fresh", "you're hired to bake my wedding cake next year" etc...

Winter Wonderland Classy White Cake

4 tier white wedding cake covered in fondant. Bows, draping and pearl borders made from fondant.

Spring Girly Cake

Our client, Karen send me this link and asked us to create something similar for her daughter's first birthday. She specifically said she doesn't want pearl borders and wants only a one tier cake and also add that "i really love all the things stick out from the cake to give it a 3D effect but I'm not sure if it will work as well on a one tier cake - could you work something like that in as well?". Other than the design, she also asked for fruit fillings.
We don't like to copy other people's cake or cupcake ideas, it's out of respect for other bakers, unfortunately, many designs are similar but we tried to put our special touch in each of them.
We came up with a red velvet cake filled with fresh strawberries and creamy vanilla frosting, cake was frost with strawberry buttercream. The cake is covered in pink fondant and the rest of the details were all made with fondant.

Pink Polka Dots with Orange Roses Cake

2 tier cake with pink polka dots with orange roses made from fondant.

Pink Tokidoki Candy Theme Cake

Alexis' mother gave me the freedom to "do whatever you like" which was a lot of pressure to be creative and be able to deliver. It's actually easier to have a client tell me what they want. I had tons of crazy ideas and decided to have a pink candy theme cake with Tokidoki characters. I liked the baby b/c it looks just like Alexis. Since it's Alexis' first birthday and she doesn't have a favorite theme, I thought what's cuter than Tokidoki characters? And the characters I've chosen were all pink =).

The four characters that we've decided to make is the Baby (I don't know her character name), Ciao Ciao, Hello Kitty Candy Cane (limited edition) & Polpettina figures. They were all made from gumpaste earlier this week. The candies, lollipops and the number 1 are also made out of gumpaste. The bow, flowers, pearls and borders were made from fondant.

Top tier cake is red velvet with creamy vanilla filling (Alexis' older sister's favorite flavor) frost with swiss buttercream and covered in fondant. Bottom tier is chocolate cake filled with creamy vanilla frosting (the mother's favorite flavor) frost with chocolate buttercream and covered in fondant.

Does the Baby Tokidoki character look like Alexis? She also have a little pink hair pin on the right side of her hair just like the Baby Tokidoki character.

The cake took two days to make so yes, hubs and I haven't slept for two days which reminds me, I'm going to pig out and pass out now!

If I don't get a chance to update, Have a Jolly and YuMMie Holiday Season!

Red Velvet cake with vanilla cream cheese frosting and swiss meringue buttercream. Bride specifically wanted a not-so-perfect top cake so absolutely no fondant. She wanted a very "home-made" look. The bird toppers were designed by my logo designer, Cheryl and it's the only none edible on this cake. The orchids were made by gumpaste =).

Our YuMMie Wedding

We lost our independence on this day =).

Just want to share a few yummie things at our wedding.

My pink Strawberry Cupcake clutch was made by Judith Leiber. It was a limited edition release, covered in hand glued Austrian crystals. It was a smaller version of the bag Charlotte's daughter, Lily was carrying on Sex and the City movie. The reason why this bag wasn't used was because Carrie's phone couldn't fit so they had to make a bigger version.

Thanks to my girlfriend, Jenn and Judith Leiber for "something borrowed" and of course continuing support of my cupcake business =).

Wedding 971

Besides the yummie bag, I created the Cupcake Table Seating chart a few hours before the wedding, talk about last minute =P.

Wedding 971

And last but not least, our yummie Purple Candy Buffet which was a big hit at our wedding.

Happy Anniversary Hubby =).

My new DSLR

I finally invested in a digital SLR and it arrived today! I know I know, I'm probably the last person to get it. I'm just not very good with electronics. I've always wanted to get a DSLR but just couldn't get rid of my mini purple Canon camera that I carried around everywhere. Unfortunately it broke again. It was my third purple camera (yes same model). Hopefully, I have better luck with this camera.

Flickr0a

I'm just testing out the camera, still an amature at digital photography so please excuse my pictures. I only had two cupcakes in the fridge.

Our New LOGO

I feel so lucky to have found my logo designer, Cheryl Szabo from my church, LFCC. You can view her website at http://www.cherylszabo.com/ but she haven't updated recently, you can e-mail her at cheryl.szabo@gmail.com and just let her know Mrs YuMMie referred you.

Cheryl is everything you could hope for in a designer: very talented, easy to work with and incredibly fast. The logo perfectly captures what my cupcakes is all about- "fashionably sweet" (quoted by my girlfriend, Momo).

original design

changed the cupcake topper

changed the bow

incorporated the red

added 3D

moved the cupcake on top of the pump

keeping the colors simple

emphasis on the frosting

and after two dozen changes...

we decided to go with this one!

I'm just a sucker for purple =P.
